Balthasar Ress Von Unserm Rheingau Pinot Noir Trocken is a dry Spätburgunder from a German region far better known for its Riesling.

Pinot Noir goes by the name Spätburgunder in Germany, and the Rheingau has a longer history with it than most outsiders realise: at Assmannshausen, at the western end of the region, the variety has been grown on slate for centuries and gives some of the country's most respected reds. Germany as a whole is now one of the largest growers of Pinot Noir anywhere, behind only France and the United States by planted area. Von Unserm is the more approachable of the Balthasar Ress ranges, drawn from across the family's Rheingau holdings and fermented out fully dry, as Trocken on a German label always indicates. The variety is generally thought to have travelled north from Burgundy in the Middle Ages, carried by the same monastic orders that shaped so much of German viticulture.

Serve lightly chilled, at around fifteen degrees, with roast poultry, mushroom dishes or charcuterie.
