Benjamin Leroux Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois is a red from Blagny, an appellation that survives on barely five hectares of Pinot Noir.

Blagny is the appellation used for red wine grown in the hamlet that sits above Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet; the same vineyards produce white under the Meursault or Puligny names. Only around five hectares of Pinot Noir remain, and Leroux has close to one of them. His vines lie above the Dos de l'Âne, in the lower part of La Pièce Sous Le Bois. He has argued for years that this high, limestone-rich terroir is well suited to both colours, and more so as the climate warms. He first vinified a Pinot Noir from the site in 2014 and bought an estate parcel at the first opportunity, in 2017. Hail in June 2023 cut yields to 45 hectolitres per hectare. The wine saw 15% new oak.

Give it three to ten years; it suits roast duck, game birds or mushrooms. Serve at 16-18°C.
