Description
Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Grand Champs Aligoté is the first release from a plot of ninety-seven-year-old vines in Chassagne-Montrachet.
Aligoté is Burgundy's second white grape, long treated as an afterthought and increasingly taken seriously where old vines survive on good sites. Benjamin Leroux went looking for a high-quality old-vine source and came across this parcel late in 2022. His original intention was simply to secure massale cuttings for future plantings, but tasting the first vintage from cask changed his plans. The Grands Champs vineyard lies in Chassagne-Montrachet, below the village and beside the restored nineteenth-century washhouse of Fontaine Saulx. The plot is unusual in that every vine is healthy and none has been replaced, which is rare at that age. The wine is vinified in a single twelve-hectolitre cask. The small bunches these old vines produce give it noticeably more texture and spice than Leroux's straight Aligoté bottling.
Ready on release and worth holding three to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, a gougère or a plate of oysters.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
