Description

Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Rouge is a regional Burgundy assembled from declassified fruit in Pommard, Volnay and Meursault.

Benjamin Leroux ran Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard before establishing his own house in Beaune, and his Bourgogne Rouge has long been treated as a benchmark for the appellation. The blend draws on his established Bourgogne-level sources: Maison Dieu in Pommard, Mon Poulain in Volnay and Les Belles Côtes in Meursault. These were complemented in this release by village and premier cru wines from Monthélie, which is not something the label has to declare. Whole-bunch fermentation was used only on the components from Leroux's own vines, with the rest destemmed. Maturation took place in a 2,200-litre Grenier oak cask alongside ten 228-litre barrels, of which ten per cent were new, so wood sits well in the background. It is regional Burgundy on paper but built almost entirely from Côte de Beaune material.

Approachable from release and good over the next five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, duck breast or a mushroom tart.
