Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2022

Benjamin Leroux's Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle comes from a site directly below the grand cru Chapelle-Chambertin, and only two barrels were made.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits communes and holds nine grands crus along its mid-slope. Petite Chapelle lies just beneath Chapelle-Chambertin and shares much of that vineyard's make-up: limestone scree under a thin layer of clay topsoil, which tends to give a lifted, perfumed style rather than a heavy one. Benjamin Leroux set up his own label in 2007 after years running Domaine du Comte Armand at Pommard, and works as both grower and négociant across the Côte, with a deliberately light hand in the cellar. This is only the second release from the site under his name. Set beside his Cazetiers, which is the more structured of the two, Petite Chapelle gives the prettier and more elegant expression, and both were made in a fine, delicate register in 2022. The scale is very small: two barrels in all.

Best from three or four years and good for a decade beyond that. Serve with roast duck, mushrooms on toast or lentils and bacon, at 16–18°C.
