Description
Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs is a village lieu-dit bottling of five barrels, drawn from high ground at the northern end of the commune.
En Champs lies close to the Brochon boundary, high on the slope just beneath the premier cru Champeaux, at the northern end of what is sometimes called the Côte Saint-Jacques. The soils are very stony with red clay, and the altitude and the cooling winds that funnel through moderate the ripening. The site has a track record: Domaine Denis Mortet has bottled distinguished examples from it. Leroux had long blended his fruit into the village Gevrey but found the quality of recent vintages persuasive enough to bottle it separately, and five barrels were made. It is a deeper, more serious and more ferrous wine than his other village bottlings, with high-toned fruit, plenty of spice and fine tannins. The 2023 fermented with 40% whole bunches.
Give it three to twelve years; serve with roast lamb, game or mushroom dishes at 16-18°C.
