Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Chambertin is drawn from old, biodynamically farmed vines in the heart of Le Chambertin, and Australia's allocation ran to six magnums.
Chambertin is the senior Grand Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin and the benchmark for structured, long-lived red Burgundy, sitting mid-slope on thin brown limestone soils. Benjamin Leroux buys fruit and farms parcels across the Côte d'Or from his base in Beaune, and this is among the rarest wines in his range at three barrels in total. The vines are old and worked biodynamically. The 2023 was vinified with 80 per cent whole bunches, a high proportion that suits the depth of material this site provides, and raised in roughly one-third new oak; one of the barrels was pre-seasoned with white wine before filling, a technique Leroux uses to soften the imprint of new wood. The wine is deep and firmly built but carries an unusual lightness of touch for the appellation.
Cellar it for a decade at least, then serve with roast beef, hare or aged hard cheese at 16 to 18°C.
