Description
Benjamin Leroux's Charmes-Chambertin now draws on a new parcel of organically tended mature vines in the upper part of the Aux Charmes terroir.
Charmes-Chambertin lies below the Route des Grands Crus on the Morey side of Gevrey-Chambertin, and growers may bottle fruit from the adjoining Mazoyères-Chambertin under the same name, which Leroux has long done. The new plot sits on the higher ground of Aux Charmes, running alongside the road between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin, directly opposite the boundary between Latricières-Chambertin and Chambertin itself; it is a markedly better position than the lower reaches of the appellation. Blended with the existing Mazoyères fruit, the cuvée now stretches to four barrels. The house style holds: careful sorting, restrained extraction and measured use of new oak, so the site rather than the cellar carries the wine.
Best from five to eight years and good for fifteen; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, beef bourguignon or an aged epoisses.
