Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis comes from a 0.13-hectare parcel planted in 1962 in the middle of one of the Côte d'Or's least-seen Grand Crus.
Clos Saint-Denis sits above the village of Morey-Saint-Denis and covers just 6.6 hectares, roughly a third the size of neighbouring Clos de la Roche. That small area is split between many owners, so the wine is rarely encountered. Leroux has bottled his tiny holding for a number of years; the vines sit squarely inside the original clos and have always been farmed organically. The style here leans towards perfume and lift rather than weight, which suits Leroux's hand: the fruit was mostly destemmed and the wine raised in one-third new oak, a restrained regime for a Grand Cru. Leroux himself calls this cuvée his mon chouchou, the teacher's pet of the cellar.
Cellar it for at least five years and drink over the following fifteen; serve at 16-18°C with rare beef, roast pigeon or a truffled potato gratin.
