Description
Clos Saint-Denis is among the least-tasted grand crus of the Côte d'Or, and Benjamin Leroux makes his from a 0.13-hectare parcel planted in 1962 in the middle of the original clos.
At 6.6 hectares the appellation is roughly a third the size of neighbouring Clos de la Roche, and ownership is heavily fragmented, so very little of it reaches the market under any one label. Leroux has bottled this wine for many years, and the vines have always been farmed organically. It is the more perfumed and finer-boned of the two Morey-Saint-Denis grand crus in his range, with less muscle than the Clos de la Roche and more in the way of lift and detail. As in the previous release the fruit was mostly destemmed, and the wine was aged in one-third new barrels. Leroux calls this his mon chouchou, the favourite of the cellar.
Give it eight years or more; serve at 16-18°C with roast poultry, veal or a dish of morels.
