Description
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Echézeaux is drawn from En Orveaux, one of the coolest and highest climats within this large Grand Cru.
Echézeaux covers around 36 hectares in Flagey-Echézeaux and is really a collection of eleven climats of quite different character, which is why producer and parcel matter so much here. En Orveaux is a five-hectare site on the upper slope above Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echézeaux, bordering Chambolle-Musigny and exposed to the winds funnelling down the Combe d'Orveau. There is very little topsoil before the vines reach hard limestone comparable to that of Premeaux, and the wines it gives lean towards perfume, texture and a cool, vibrant finish rather than sheer weight. The 2023 fermented with 30 per cent whole bunches and was raised in three 456-litre barrels, only one of them new.
Approachable earlier than most Grand Cru Burgundy, it is best from five years and suits roast pigeon, duck or truffled pasta. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
