Description
Benjamin Leroux Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus comes from a sliver of vines directly beneath Clos des Perrières, in the part of Charmes singled out since the 1830s as its finest.
Les Charmes is the largest of the Meursault premier crus and splits into an upper Dessus section and a lower Dessous section. The Dessus benefits from a steeper slope and lighter, stonier soil, which gives a more tensile wine than the broader, softer style of the lower vineyard. Leroux acquired these vines after the 2017 harvest through a hard-fought tender that also brought him village plots including Clos du Village, parcels in Volnay Santenots and Meursault-Blagny. His holding here was planted in 1988. Winemaking follows his usual pattern for whites: whole-bunch pressing without crushing, a light settling, fermentation in cask with modest new oak and a long élevage on lees, all aimed at texture rather than weight.
Best from around three years and good for ten or more, it suits roast veal, brill in butter or a mature Comté. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
