Benjamin Leroux Nuits-Saint-Georges 2023

Benjamin Leroux Nuits-Saint-Georges is blended from three lieux-dits at the northern end of the appellation, within sight of Vosne-Romanée.

Nuits-Saint-Georges runs for several kilometres along the Côte de Nuits and changes character across its length; the northern sector, closest to Vosne, tends to give more perfumed and finer-boned wines than the sturdier southern end towards Premeaux. Leroux takes the bulk of this cuvée from Aux Herbues on the Vosne border, adds a parcel in Saints-Jacques next door, and completes it with Les Tuyaux, a stony terroir at the far northern edge of the appellation. The 2023 was entirely destemmed. Élevage is in cask with a measured proportion of new oak. The result carries the earthy, faintly ferrous tannin that marks the village, but with more finesse than Nuits is usually credited with, and the producer rates it the best he has made here.

Approachable from three years and good for a decade, it suits roast duck, mushroom dishes and aged beef. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
