Description

Benjamin Leroux Pommard is a village wine drawn from three separate parcels on either side of the commune.

Leroux managed Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard for fifteen years before setting up his own house in Beaune, so this is familiar ground. Les Cras and Les Vaumuriens-Hauts both lie on the Volnay side of the village, and he notes that the cooler hillside fruit from Vaumuriens brings freshness and balance to the naturally warmer Cras. This release adds fruit from Petits Noizons, a sought-after village site facing south on shallow limestone at the top of the hill. Across the three parcels about half the bunches were kept whole in the ferment. Only four barrels were produced, one of them a new 450-litre cask, so the oak sits well behind the fruit. The result is a finer-boned Pommard than the appellation's reputation suggests.

Best from three years and drinking well for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, duck confit or a well-aged washed-rind cheese.
