Description
Benjamin Leroux Saint-Romain Sous le Château comes from half a hectare of organically farmed Chardonnay on the stony soils below the village's ruined castle.
Saint-Romain lies in a cool side valley behind Meursault and Auxey-Duresses, high enough that its whites keep a taut, chalky line even in warm years. Leroux works two parcels in the lieu-dit Sous le Château, one of 60-year-old vines and one of 20-year-old vines, farmed organically. The soils are stony and rugged, typical of the appellation, but the site is sheltered from the northern winds and the loose stones on the surface radiate heat back into the vines. The valley's cool air encourages later budburst, which helped limit frost damage, so yields were down only around 15 per cent. Vinification was split half in foudres and half in 300-litre barrels, and the wine is sealed under Diam.
Ready now and holding well for five or six years; serve at 10–12°C with grilled white fish, goat's cheese or a chicken and tarragon salad.
