Benjamin Leroux Saint-Romain Sous le Château 2023

Benjamin Leroux Saint-Romain Sous le Château comes from 0.6 hectares of organically farmed old vines in one of the appellation's better-known lieux-dits.

Saint-Romain sits in a fold of the hills behind Meursault and Auxey-Duresses, higher and cooler than the main body of the Côte de Beaune, which has made it a useful source of fresh, mineral Chardonnay as the region has warmed. Leroux's holding comprises three parcels averaging around fifty years of age, the best known of them Fort Champagne, all farmed organically. The soils are stony and rugged in the manner typical of the appellation, but the site is sheltered from the northern winds and the loose stones covering the surface radiate heat back into the vines, which helps ripening at this altitude. Vinification was split, with half the wine raised in foudre and the remainder in 600-litre barrels, a WineGlobe and amphorae.

Ready on release and good for five or six years, it works with grilled whiting, roast chicken or a chèvre salad. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
