Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses 2022

Les Vergelesses is the premier cru Benjamin Leroux rates highest in Savigny-lès-Beaune, and only the second release to appear under its own label.

The vineyard lies on the Pernand side of the valley that divides Savigny, and it is generally reckoned the commune's finest terroir. Leroux has worked a small parcel here for five years, blending the fruit into his Savigny village wine while he improved the viticulture, and has only recently judged it ready to stand alone. He describes it as carrying another layer of elegance compared with Lavières or Serpentières. Like his other Savigny bottlings it is on the delicate side and drinks well young, which makes it a natural restaurant wine, but there is more depth and a touch more structure here, likely a product of the higher clay content in the soil and of the third of the crop that fermented as whole bunches.

Drinkable now and good for six or seven years; serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled mushrooms.
