Description
Les Vergelesses is widely held to be Savigny-lès-Beaune's finest terroir, and Benjamin Leroux calls it his favourite of the village's Premiers Crus.
Savigny-lès-Beaune lies in a side valley north of Beaune, and its Premiers Crus divide between the lighter, sandier slopes on the Pernand side and the deeper, clay-influenced sites towards Beaune. Les Vergelesses belongs to the former group but has the extra clay that gives structure. Leroux farmed a small parcel here for more than five years, improving the viticulture before he was satisfied enough to release it under its own label; earlier vintages went into his village Savigny. He describes the site as offering another layer of elegance compared with the other Premiers Crus of the commune. About a third of the crop was fermented as whole bunches, and the wine was raised in barrel with modest new oak, giving finesse alongside depth and fine structure.
It can be drunk young but will reward five to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with roast duck, veal or mushroom dishes.
