Description
Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune is a village red built mainly on Pinot Fin from the Aux Fourneaux lieu-dit at the northern end of the commune.
Savigny-lès-Beaune occupies a side valley behind Beaune, divided between the Pernand side and the Beaune side, and its reds are among the more open and perfumed of the Côte de Beaune. Benjamin Leroux, who made his name at Comte Armand before setting up his own house in Beaune, takes the bulk of this cuvée from Aux Fourneaux in the north of the village, where he works a good deal of Pinot Fin, a low-yielding, small-berried selection of Pinot Noir that gives concentration. That fruit fermented with 15 per cent whole bunches, and a fully destemmed parcel of Les Conardises was folded in as well. Half the wine was raised without sulphur, and the élevage was entirely in large format — half foudre and half 600-litre barrels — so there is no new-oak imprint on it.
Approachable young and good for five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, duck breast or a plate of charcuterie.
