Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 2023

Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune draws most of its fruit from Aux Fourneaux in the north of the village, planted largely to the low-yielding Pinot Fin.

Savigny-lès-Beaune sits in a valley cut by the Rhoin, between Beaune and the Corton hill, and its two slopes give quite different wines: firmer and more structured on the Beaune side, lighter and more perfumed on the Pernand side. Leroux takes the lion's share of this cuvée from Aux Fourneaux, including roughly 10 per cent from the premier cru section of the vineyard, and much of it is Pinot Fin, a high-quality, small-berried selection that crops lightly and concentrates well. The Connardises parcel that once contributed has been sold and is replaced by Saucours, on the western extension of the slope near Les Hauts Jarrons, whose alluvial soils bring bright red fruit against the depth and backbone of Aux Fourneaux. The wine fermented with 15 per cent whole bunches.

Good from two years and holding for six or seven, it suits roast chicken, charcuterie or mushroom dishes. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
