Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a 0.64-hectare monopole and the highest-sited Premier Cru in the commune.
The clos belongs to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's right-hand man, and was rarely seen as a bottling of its own before Leroux began working the site in 2007. It sits at the top of the Volnay slope on fine, light soils, an altitude that has become an advantage as vintages have warmed. The vines run up to eighty years of age with an average around fifty, and include a block of twenty-year-old massale selection taken from Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux. The site is farmed biodynamically and is where Carré and Leroux trial their most progressive viticulture. Leroux has observed the wine moving towards a finer, more floral register in recent harvests. Around twenty per cent whole bunches were retained in the ferment this year.
Drinks well from three years and will reward ten or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, duck breast or a beetroot and goat's cheese salad.
