Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs 2021

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a 0.64-hectare monopole and the highest Premier Cru in the commune.

Volnay makes the most delicately framed reds of the Côte de Beaune, and this walled site sits at the top of the slope on light, fine soils. The clos belongs to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's right-hand man, and was rarely bottled on its own before Leroux began working with it in 2007. Vines run up to 80 years old, averaging around 50, and include some 20-year-old massal-selection material taken from Comte Armand's Clos des Épeneaux. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and is where Carré and Leroux trial their most progressive viticulture. Leroux notes that recent harvests have moved the wine towards a finer, more floral register; around 20 per cent whole bunches were retained in this vintage.

Drinkable from three or four years and good for a decade; serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, duck breast or a mushroom tart.
