Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a 0.64-hectare monopole and the highest premier cru in the village.
The clos belongs to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's right-hand man, and was rarely seen as a bottling in its own right before Leroux began making it in 2007. It sits at the top of the Volnay slope on fine, light soils, the sort of ground that gives delicacy rather than power. The vines are up to 80 years old, averaging around 50, and include some 20-year-old massal selection material taken from Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux. The site is farmed biodynamically and with unusual care; Carré and Leroux use it to test their most progressive viticulture. Recent harvests have pushed the wine towards an even finer, more floral register, and the 2023 was fermented with 10% whole bunches.
Drink from three to twelve years; serve with duck, veal or roast chicken at 16-18°C.
