Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2020

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets comes from half a hectare in Caillerets-Dessus, the site many growers regard as the finest in the commune.

Volnay produces the most perfumed and finely boned reds of the Côte de Beaune, and Les Caillerets is its benchmark vineyard, the subject of the old line that if you have not drunk Caillerets you do not know Volnay. The fourteen-odd hectare cru sits mid-slope between Les Santenots to the south and En Champans to the north, and is subdivided into three lieux-dits; growers such as d'Angerville, Lafarge and Pousse d'Or all hold vines here. Benjamin Leroux farms 0.5 hectares of Pinot Fin in the Caillerets-Dessus section, planted in 1945, 1985 and the late 1990s. Sixty per cent of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches, with only the youngest vines de-stemmed, and the wine was raised in about one-quarter new oak.

Best from four years on, with the structure for fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast squab, veal or a dish of morels.
