Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is drawn from half a hectare of Pinot Fin in the vineyard many growers call the king of Volnay.
Caillerets sits mid-slope in Volnay, bordered by Les Santenots to the south and En Champans to the north, with an exposure that has long made it the reference point for the village; the old local line runs that if you have not drunk Caillerets you do not know Volnay. The 14-odd-hectare vineyard is divided into three lieux-dits and worked by growers including d'Angerville, Lafarge and Pousse d'Or. Leroux farms 0.5 hectares of Pinot Fin in the sector known as Caillerets-Dessus, planted in 1945, 1985 and the late 1990s. The wine was made with a high proportion of whole bunches, around 60 per cent, with only the youngest-vine fruit destemmed, and raised in roughly one-quarter new oak. Bottled under natural cork.
Approachable from about five years and good for a decade or more; serve at 16–18°C with roast quail, veal or a dish of wild mushrooms.
