Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets comes from half a hectare of Pinot Fin in Caillerets-Dessus, the site Leroux calls the king of Volnay.
Volnay is the most perfumed of the Côte de Beaune's red communes, and Les Caillerets, at some fourteen hectares mid-slope on the Meursault border, is its most revered premier cru; the old saying holds that if you have not drunk Caillerets you do not know Volnay. The vineyard divides into three lieux-dits and is worked by growers including d'Angerville, Lafarge and Pousse d'Or. Leroux farms 0.5 hectares of Pinot Fin in the section known as Caillerets-Dessus, planted in 1945, 1985 and the late 1990s. The wine was made with a high proportion of whole bunches, around 80 per cent, with only the youngest vines destemmed, and raised in roughly one-quarter new oak. It combines the silky, floral shape of Volnay with the depth of a much grander appellation.
Give it four or five years, then serve with duck breast, roast quail or a mushroom ragoût at 16 to 18°C.
