Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2020

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans is drawn from a 0.65-hectare parcel at the geographic heart of the appellation.

The name Mitans derives from the old French for centre, which is almost certainly a reference to the vineyard's position on the slopes directly beneath the village of Volnay, in the middle of the Premier Cru belt. Leroux's parcel lies close to Clos de la Barre and encroaches into the neighbouring Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil is a fine clay shot through with limestone, and the vines average fifty years of age. Volnay is the most delicately framed of the Côte de Beaune communes, and Mitans tends to give a wine of clear red-fruited perfume with rather more flesh than the village bottlings, without losing the fine-boned tannin that marks the place. Only a pinch of whole bunch went into the ferment this year, keeping the emphasis on fruit and site rather than stem character.

Open from three years, with a decade of life ahead. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, pork belly or grilled mushrooms.
