Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans comes from a small parcel in the middle of the appellation, in the climat that gives Volnay's most fine-boned wines.
Volnay lies between Pommard and Meursault on the Côte de Beaune and is the reference point for delicacy in red Burgundy, its wines built on perfume and fine tannin rather than weight. The name Mitans derives from the old French for centre, which is almost certainly a reference to the vineyard's position at the heart of the appellation on the slopes beneath the village. Benjamin Leroux, who set up on his own account in Beaune after years running Domaine du Comte Armand, farms 0.65 hectares here, close to the premier cru Clos de la Barre and running into the Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil is fine clay shot through with limestone and the vines average fifty years of age. Only a small proportion of whole bunches was used, and the wine is bottled under natural cork.
Drinkable now with air, but at its best from about five years and on for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, duck breast or mushrooms on toast.
