Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2022

Les Mitans lies at the centre of Volnay, on the slope beneath the village, and takes its name from the old French word for middle.

Volnay is the most finely drawn of the Côte de Beaune's red communes, and its premiers crus on the mid-slope are the heart of it. Benjamin Leroux farms 0.65 hectares here, close to the premier cru Clos de la Barre and running into the neighbouring Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil is a fine clay shot through with limestone, a combination that holds moisture well through dry summers, and the vines average 50 years of age. Leroux, who ran Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard before founding his own house in Beaune in 2007, works with restrained extraction and moderate new oak across the range, and the wine here is deep but sapid, with power and finesse held in balance.

Drinking from three years and holding for a decade; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck breast or a mushroom tart.
