Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans is made from a 0.65-hectare parcel at the heart of the appellation, on the slopes directly beneath the village.
The name Les Mitans derives from the old French for centre, which fits its position mid-appellation. Leroux's parcel lies close to the premier cru Clos de la Barre and extends into the neighbouring Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil is a fine clay shot through with limestone, a combination that holds moisture well through dry spells and helps the vines stay in balance in warm seasons. His vines here average fifty years of age. Volnay is the most floral and fine-grained of the Côte de Beaune's red villages, and Les Mitans gives a red-fruited style with more savoury complexity than its central, gentle-sloped position might suggest. Vinification follows Leroux's usual pattern, with a portion of whole bunches and moderate new oak.
Approachable from three years and good for a decade, it suits duck, roast quail or veal. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
