Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2021

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is made from one hectare of estate-owned, organically farmed 70-year-old vines on the clay-rich soils where Volnay meets Meursault.

Les Santenots lies across the Meursault border but is sold as Volnay when planted to Pinot Noir, and it counts among the top premiers crus of the village. The clay-rich soils here give wines of perfumed depth and silken structure rather than the airier profile of the vineyards higher up the slope. Leroux has spoken of Santenots for years as the one Volnay vineyard he most wanted to work with, buying wine from it before he had vines of his own. His holding runs to a hectare of estate-owned vines around 70 years old, farmed organically. The 2021 crop was reasonable by the standards of the vintage in Volnay, and 35 per cent whole bunches went into the ferment, giving a notably floral-scented expression of the site.

Give it three to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with duck breast, mushroom risotto or roast pork.
