Description
Les Santenots is one of Volnay's top Premiers Crus, and Benjamin Leroux farms a hectare of seventy-year-old vines there organically.
Santenots sits on the Meursault side of the boundary, where clay-rich soils give reds of perfumed depth and silken structure; wine from the site is sold as Volnay 1er Cru when planted to Pinot Noir. Asked years ago which Volnay vineyard he would most like to work with, Leroux named Santenots without hesitation, before going on to Rugiens and Caillerets. The parcel is estate-owned and farmed organically, and it was among the first he picked in this vintage. Thirty per cent of the bunches went into the ferment whole. Leroux talks about the iron note the clay here gives and calls his Santenots a full-on reflection of Volnay, saying he likes the grip it has, which sets it apart from the perfumed lightness the village is usually credited with.
Best from four to twelve years; serve at 16–18°C with roast duck, beef or a mushroom ragout.
