Benjamin Leroux Volnay 2021

Benjamin Leroux Volnay is a village wine blended from young vines in the premier cru Les Mitans and the lieu-dit Les Grands Poisots on the Pommard border.

Volnay is the Côte de Beaune’s most perfumed red appellation, and Benjamin Leroux, who runs a small négoce and domaine from Beaune, is widely regarded as one of its most reliable interpreters. In this release there is no La Gigotte, so the blend was drawn instead from younger vines in Les Mitans, a premier cru in the heart of the appellation, together with Les Grands Poisots, a village-level lieu-dit that runs up to the Pommard boundary. Only a small proportion of whole bunches was used, and Leroux again picked out the best-looking clusters at the sorting table. The wine is perfumed and aromatic in the way Volnay should be, with gentle tannins carefully wrapped in a voluptuous texture. Sealed under natural cork.

Approachable now and holding for six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, guinea fowl or mushrooms on toast.
