Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay is a village wine blended from the two Poisots lieux-dits on the Pommard boundary.
Volnay is the most perfumed of the Côte de Beaune's red appellations, though its southern edge, where it meets Pommard, gives something firmer. This wine is a blend of Les Grands Poisots and Les Petits Poisots, the two lieux-dits that border Pommard, and it leans towards that heavier style. The deep clay soils and old vines give density and ripe tannin, which Leroux balances with a judicious proportion of whole bunches in the ferment and maturation in large oak rather than small new barrels. Benjamin Leroux began as a winemaker in Pommard before establishing his own house in Beaune in 2007, and he has made Volnay a consistent strength across two decades. The same vines are worked by several other well-regarded growers, which says something about the quality of the sites.
Already open but built to reward eight to twelve years in the cellar, it suits duck, roast lamb or aged hard cheese. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
