Benjamin Leroux Volnay 2023

Benjamin Leroux's village Volnay is drawn from the two Poisots lieux-dits on the Pommard border, with a healthy selection from his Premier Cru vineyards blended in.

Volnay is the most perfumed of the Côte de Beaune's red communes, though its southern end, where it meets Pommard, carries deeper clay and gives sturdier wines. Leroux has made Volnay for over two decades and knows the ground well. This bottling blends Les Grands Poisots and Les Petits Poisots, both bordering Pommard, with fruit declassified from his Premier Cru holdings. The deep clay soils and old vines give density and ripe tannin, which Leroux balances with judicious use of whole bunches and maturation in large oak rather than small barrels. The result leans towards Pommard in shape while keeping Volnay's aromatic lift, and it is unusually complete for a village wine.

Already drinking well and good for eight to twelve years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast lamb, guinea fowl or a beef daube.
