Benjamin Leroux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Au-Dessus des Malconsorts 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Au-Dessus des Malconsorts is a small Vosne-Romanée premier cru sitting above Aux Malconsorts, and Benjamin Leroux makes a single 600-litre barrel of it, bottled here in magnum.

Aux Malconsorts is among the most highly regarded premier cru climats in the Côte de Nuits, running along the Nuits-Saint-Georges boundary next to La Tâche. The strip immediately above it is rockier, with thinner soil, and the wines it gives lean towards perfume and freshness rather than the flesh of the vineyard below. Leroux, based in Beaune since 2007, works with a long list of such small parcels. Bunches and berries here are naturally tiny; this release fermented with 80% whole bunches and was racked early out of a new barrel into a pair of two-year-old barriques, keeping oak influence to a minimum. The magnum format will stretch its development further.

Give it five to ten years; serve at 16-18°C with roast squab, duck or a dish of wild mushrooms.
