Description

Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is made from a single barrel of fruit off 60-year-old vines in the northern part of the cru.

Clos Saint-Jean rises above the village of Chassagne-Montrachet and is one of the larger premiers crus on the hillside, familiar to anyone who follows Paul Pillot. The Moreau family have farmed here for generations, and Benoît Moreau converted his holding to organic farming after taking it on. His fruit comes from a very small tranche of 60-year-old vines in the northern section near Les Vergers, where the soils carry less of the red clay typical of the cru and a good deal more limestone, which gives a wine of depth with a mineral spine. The parcel is so small that only one barrel was produced, and because the wine is not shown for review it remains largely unknown outside the domaine's own following. Farming is organic; oak use is deliberately restrained.

It will drink well from release and hold for six to ten years; try it with turbot, roast veal or a washed-rind cheese, served at 10-12°C.
