Benoît Moreau Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La Cardeuse Rouge 2023

Benoît Moreau Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La Cardeuse Rouge comes from two old Pinot Noir parcels in one of Chassagne's smallest Premier Crus.

La Cardeuse is a tiny vineyard in the south of Chassagne-Montrachet, and it was a Bernard Moreau monopole until the vines were divided between Benoît and his brother Alex. Moreau's grandfather planted the plot with an eye to the soil: Pinot Noir on the clay at the bottom and top of the parcel, Chardonnay on the chalkier band through the middle. The two red sections are old, at forty-five years up top and sixty-five years below. In the cellar Benoît avoids punching down, preferring gentler extraction, and the proportion of whole bunches varies with the season, usually between thirty and fifty per cent. Chassagne red has long lived in the shadow of the commune's whites, but plots like this one show what the clay soils can do.

Approachable from two or three years and good for a decade, it suits duck, roast pork or mushroom dishes. Serve at 16-18°C.
