Description
Benoît Moreau Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Rouge is made from fruit under a long-standing contract that dates back to the Domaine Bernard Moreau days.
Les Santenots lies on the boundary between Volnay and Meursault, and red wine grown there carries the Volnay name. It is one of the appellation's leading premiers crus, and its clay-rich soils are known for wines that combine perfume with a silken frame rather than obvious power. Benoît Moreau buys the fruit through a grower contract inherited from the family domaine, which he now shares with his brother Alex. The winemaking follows the pattern of his other reds, with a generous proportion of whole bunches in the ferment, no punchdowns and only light extraction, and a restrained oak regime of 16 months in 20% new barrels. The result is a compact, floral, red-fruited Volnay with fine-grained structure rather than weight.
Best from two years after release and good for eight to twelve years; serve with duck, roast lamb or mushroom dishes at 16-18°C.
