Description
Bérêche et Fils Le Cran is a single-vintage Champagne from two mid-slope parcels of old vines in the family's home village of Ludes, disgorged in July 2018.
Ludes lies on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims and is classified premier cru. Le Cran comes from Les Hautes Plantes and Saint-Jean, two very chalky mid-slope parcels planted in 1969 and facing east and west, and the blend is an even split of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Bérêche family has farmed here since 1847, and brothers Raphaël and Vincent run the house today across around nine hectares, having given up herbicides in 2003. The base wine for Le Cran ferments slowly in small oak barrels of about 350 litres, malolactic conversion is blocked, and the wine then spends an unusually long stretch on lees under cork rather than crown cap before hand disgorgement and a very low dosage. The result has the weight and detail of a still white wine, and repays a proper wine glass rather than a flute.
Drinking now and good for a decade or more. Serve at about 8°C with roast chicken, scallops or aged Comté.
