Description
Bérêche et Fils Mailly Grand Cru is a single-village Champagne from the Les Chalois lieu-dit at Mailly, disgorged in October 2018 after around five years on lees.
Mailly-Champagne is a grand cru on the northern flank of the Montagne de Reims, where the north-easterly aspect slows ripening and leaves the wines firm and chalk-driven. The Bérêche family has grown vines at nearby Ludes since 1847, and brothers Raphaël and Vincent run the house today, farming around nine hectares across Ludes, Ormes, Trépail, Mailly, Rilly-la-Montagne and Mareuil-le-Port. Herbicides were abandoned in 2003. Each parcel is fermented separately in barrel with ambient yeasts, malolactic conversion is blocked, and the wines take their second fermentation and long ageing under cork rather than crown cap, which accounts for much of the texture. Bottles are disgorged by hand with a low dosage. The Mailly bottling comes from the family's parcel at Les Chalois and is kept apart from the house blends, so that the village rather than the assemblage does the talking.
Drinking now and capable of a further decade. Serve at about 8°C in a wine glass, with roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a mature hard cheese.
