Description
Bernabeleva Madrid Camino de Navaherreros Blanco is an organic, old-vine Albillo-led white from the granite slopes of the Sierra de Gredos.
San Martín de Valdeiglesias sits in the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid, where old vines grow at altitude on granitic sands — a combination that gives wines of freshness and lift rather than weight. Bernabeleva farms organically here, and the Camino de Navaherreros wines began as an entry-level range made at the request of the estate’s American importer, intended to introduce drinkers to the more serious bottlings above them. The white leans heavily on the estate’s old-vine Albillo, which supplies textured, floral fruit, with freshness coming from a field blend of Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca and Malvar. The grapes are pressed gently and fermented with wild yeasts in a mixture of used oak barrels, large oak vats and stainless steel; the portion in open vats includes some whole bunches and skin maceration, and malolactic fermentation is allowed on some parcels and not others depending on the year. Bottling follows nine months on lees. With an extra year in bottle this has settled into a savoury, stony register with real purity and a long citrus finish.
Drinking well now and good for three or four years; serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a herbed white-bean salad.
