Description
Bernabeleva Madrid Navaherreros Garnacha in magnum is a village-level Grenache from fifty- to ninety-year-old vines on granite in the Sierra de Gredos.
Bernabeleva’s ‘villages’ Grenache is assembled from parcels spread across the estate at San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid, where vines are rooted in decomposed granite at altitude. Soils, orientations and microclimates differ from plot to plot and the vines run from fifty to ninety years old, among them the vineyard the estate calls Kung Fu, named after the farmer who tends it and his fondness for Bruce Lee films. Each site is vinified slowly and separately, with forty to sixty days on skins and a measure of whole bunches in one or more parcels, and aged apart in a combination of 500-litre casks, stainless steel and concrete depending on what the vintage calls for. After twelve months the wine is bottled without filtration. Juan Bulnes aims to bottle the character of the district: red-fruited and floral, gently layered, with sleek rocky tannins and a long, savoury finish.
The magnum will carry it well past a decade; serve lightly cool at 15–16°C with roast lamb, duck or grilled mushrooms.
