Bessin Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru la Forêt 2020

Bessin Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru la Forêt comes from vines bordering the domaine's Montmains parcels but sitting a little higher on the slope.

La Forêt lies on the left bank of the Serein within the broader Montmains climat, and is one of the Premiers Crus that growers may bottle either under its own name or under Montmains. Jean-Claude Bessin, whose domaine at La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne is now run with his son-in-law Julien Tremblay, planted both holdings at the same time and made the wines together for years. La Forêt was first bottled separately in 2016, once Bessin accepted that two vineyards this close could give such different results. The parcel's position further up the slope and its complex stony soils give a straighter, spicier and chalkier wine than the Montmains, with less flesh and a firmer mineral spine. The élevage is split between temperature-controlled tank and barrel, so the oak plays a supporting part only.

Drink from a year or two and over the following eight. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled flathead or a fresh goat's cheese.
