Bessin Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2021

Bessin Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Montmains comes from just over a hectare on the upper slope, and is one of the few wines at the domaine vinified entirely in old oak.

Montmains lies on the left bank of the Serein, on the opposite side of the valley from the grand crus, where the Kimmeridgian marl gives wines that are typically taut and citrus-driven rather than broad. The domaine's holding sits on the upper slope facing south-east, immediately alongside its parcel of La Forêt, and the vines were planted between 1968 and 1974. Until 2006 the fruit from both parcels was vinified together, and in this low-yielding season they were combined once again. Where most of the range is raised largely in stainless steel, this cuvée is fermented and aged entirely in old oak barrels, a choice that adds texture and a little breadth without introducing wood flavour, and one that suits the firmer structure of the site.

Approachable young and good for five years or so; serve at 10–12°C with oysters, grilled fish or a soft goat's cheese.
