Bodegas Exopto Rioja Horizonte de Exopto Blanco 2019

Bodegas Exopto Horizonte de Exopto Blanco is a white Rioja drawn from old vines co-planted among the estate's Tempranillo parcels.

White Rioja accounts for a small fraction of the region's output, and the best of it now comes from high, rocky sites in the Rioja Alta rather than from the valley floor. Tom Puyaubert, a Bordeaux-born vigneron who has worked in Rioja since the early 2000s, draws this wine from two plots of old vines in the Periquita and San Cristobel vineyards at Ábalos, in the highland north of the zone. The blend is mostly Viura with around ten per cent Garnacha Blanca and the balance split between Malvasía Riojana, Jaén Blanca and Torrontés, picked largely from vines interplanted in his red parcels, as was long the local habit. Fermentation is wild and takes place in concrete eggs, after which the wine is raised in a mix of eggs, old barrels and large foudre to hold on to the salinity and tension of the limestone soils.

Ready on release and worth holding three or four years. It suits grilled snapper, roast chicken and hard sheep's cheese. Serve at 10-12°C.
