Bodegas Pentecostés Rías Baixas Varietales 2022

Varietales is Bodegas Pentecostés's Rías Baixas white, blending Albariño with the region's less familiar native varieties.

Albarino is the grape that sells Rias Baixas, but the appellation permits a group of other native varieties, and the better growers increasingly argue that these have an important supporting role. Varietales is built on Albarino with 20% Caino Blanco, 20% Loureiro and a drop of Treixadura. Winemaker Jorge Marcote is evangelical about Caino Blanco in particular, a difficult, late-ripening variety that contributes piercing acidity and phenolic bite; Loureiro adds floral aromatics and Treixadura a little flesh. The winemaking follows the same lines as the estate's straight Albarino: hand-harvested fruit, an overnight rest at ten degrees, slow fermentation at cellar temperature in stainless steel with a small portion in French oak, then six months undisturbed on lees. What comes out is a Spanish white with real tension, a steely kick and stony extract behind the yellow stone fruit.

Drink now or over the next four to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, scallops or a plate of oysters.
