Bodegas Valdemar Conde Valdemar Rioja Gran Reserva sits at the top of the house's range, a classically aged Rioja made only in the stronger years.

The Martínez Bujanda family has been growing grapes around Oyón, in Rioja Alavesa, since the late nineteenth century, and Conde Valdemar is the name under which their long aged wines are bottled. Gran Reserva is the most demanding of Rioja's ageing categories: at least five years between harvest and release, with a minimum of two in oak barrel and the remainder in bottle, and in practice many houses exceed those minimums considerably. Tempranillo leads the blend, with Graciano contributing acidity and structure and Garnacha rounding it out. Because only fruit from the better years is set aside for it, the wine is not made in every vintage.

Old bottles are best stood upright for a day and decanted off any sediment; serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, game or aged hard cheese.
