Description
Bodegas Vega Sicilia Macán is a Rioja red born of a partnership between two of the most storied families in European wine.
Macán is a joint venture between the Álvarez family, owners of Vega Sicilia, and the Rothschild family of Edmond de Rothschild, brought together in Rioja rather than in either house's home ground. The vineyards lie around San Vicente de la Sonsierra in the north of Rioja Alta, on chalky slopes beneath the wall of the Sierra de Cantabria, and the wine is made entirely from Tempranillo. Parcels are picked and fermented separately, then aged in French oak, a choice that sets the wine apart from the long American oak ageing traditionally associated with the region. Vega Sicilia also owns estates in Toro and in Tokaj, but this is its only venture in Rioja.
Decant an hour or so before serving with roast lamb, game or aged Manchego, at around 17 degrees, and expect it to reward a decade or more in a cool cellar.
