Bodegas Vega Sicilia Y Viñedos Pintia Toro D.O. Tinto is a red from Toro, made by the Álvarez family a little downstream from their home in Ribera del Duero.

Toro sits on the Duero in the province of Zamora, a hot, high, dry plateau where the growing season is punishing and the vines are old and widely spaced. The grape is Tinta de Toro, a local strain of Tempranillo adapted over centuries to the conditions, and much of the region's oldest material survives on its own roots in deep sand, which phylloxera never mastered. The owners of Vega Sicilia bought land here at the end of the 1990s, drawn by those old vineyards, and built a modern winery to work them plot by plot, with ageing in French and American oak. Pintia is the result.

It stands up to strong food, from roast lamb and chorizo to grilled red meat; decant ahead and serve at around 17 degrees.
